January 6th - Cod Gulley Ogmore

for the 1st session of the new year Blackcat and Barrelreef travelled down to Ogmore. Although the forecast gave light winds and no rain it did the complete opposite. Rained like hell and blew hard to create quite a big swell.

Inspite of this we set up and fished for a few hours with frozen black lug, squid, mackerel, adnragworm for bait.

Despite trying all the combintions of bait, different rigs and different casting distances we didnt have any bites and we started 2008 the same way we started 2007 with a blank

January 23rd - Penarth beach

After some decent reports of codling, Valleyboyo and Barrelreef fished Penarth. With high water at 7.50pm we got to the beach at around 4.30pm and planned to fish 3 up 2 down. Conditions seemed ok light SW wind and cloud.
Unfortunatly Barrelreef left the fresh ragworm at home so the only bait was all frozen stuff, black lug, squid and mackerel.

We fished 2 rods one with 2/0 pulley pennels and the other with a 2 hook flapper with size 1 hooks.
1st bite came within minutes of the baits hitting the water and Barrelreef landed a little codling!
Valleyboyo followed that up quickly with a little codling of his own. Both these fish had taken small strips of squidon the flappers.

About an hour into the session Barrelreef had another little knock and wound in a little rockling that had taken a small mackerel strip.
The bites went quiet then til around high water when Valleyboyo had a little rattle and caught a small whiting.

Then a little after high Barrelreef landed another small codling and Valleyboyo also landed another codling. All the the fish had taken small baits on flapper rigs, didn't get a look in with the pulley pennels.
We had no more bites for the next hour and half so called it a night, would it have been a better session with the rag?? who knows??

The rain held off and a few fish showed....nothing of any size but better than blanking!

Barrelreef - 2 codling, 1 rockling
Valleyboyo - 2 codling, 1 whiting

January 26th Penarth beach

Barrelreef fished penarth beach and despite some good bait (fresh blacks, blow lug, rag and crab) only managed to catch 1 fish.....A little pouting.

One or two bites came to nothing. Even though the fishing was pwp,  the rain held off and and it was nice to be out fishing.

Barrelreef - 1 pouting

January 28th - Porthcawl pier

After reading on WSF forum that a few members were going to be fishing the pier, Barrelreef, Blackcat and Valleyboyo decided to go down for a few hours.

We arrived at the pier around 5.30pm to be met in the carpark by fellow WSF member Marcus and also a full pier of anglers. We managed to sqeeze in and started fishing.

Valleyboyo was 1st to catch with a whiting and Barrelreef followed that up with a whiting as well.
Valleyboyo landed a steady stream of fish from then on with a pouting and a few doggies thrown in amongst the whiting, some of which were a good size.

Blackcat also got in on the act and landed some nice whiting and doggies with Barrelreef landing a few more whiting.

Also another fellow WSF member fishing, Big Dee was unlucky to have a very good ray (looked a double) come off as he lifted it up the pier. Also was unlucky not to hook a big fish that had been having a good go at his pouting deadbait.

We fished on til around 11pm while most had gone we stayed there with Seafish40 (another WSF member) and Valleyboyo landed another few whiting and Blackcat adding a last dog to his tally.

While we were packing up another WSF member, Welsh wonder landed a nice thornback ray the 4lb mark

A nice evenings fishing....nothing big but plenty of bites and also good to meet up with a few fishing friends and meet some new ones.

Valleyboyo - 13 whiting, 3 doggies, 1 pouting
Blackcat - 2 whiting, 3 doggies
Barrelreef - 4 whiting
